VfL Wolfsburg spielte 2015–16 unter Trainer Dieter Hecking in der Bundesliga und belegte den achten Platz. André Schürrle war mit neun Ligatoren Top-Scorer. In der Champions League überzeugte der Klub mit einer starken Gruppenphase, besiegte KAA Gent im Achtelfinale und schlug Real Madrid im Viertelfinale zuhause mit 2:0 – mit Julian Draxler als bestem Torschützen im Wettbewerb. Das Viertelfinale-Rückspiel in Madrid endete 0:3.
