VfL Wolfsburg krönte die Saison 2014/15 als Bundesliga-Vizemeister mit 69 Punkten aus 34 Spielen, angeführt von Bas Dost mit 16 Toren und Kevin De Bruyne mit 10 Treffern. Heimsiege gegen Bayern München (4:1) und Bayer Leverkusen (4:1) unterstrichen die Offensivkraft. Im DFB-Pokal setzte sich Wolfsburg gegen Inter Mailand im Achtelfinale sowie gegen SC Freiburg, Arminia Bielefeld und im Finale gegen Borussia Dortmund (3:1) durch und gewann den Pokal. In der Europa League erreichte das Team das Viertelfinale gegen Neapel. In der Folgesaison 2015/16 belegte Wolfsburg mit 45 Punkten Platz 8 der Bundesliga.
