How to care for your shirt
An old football shirt is a piece of football history - and with us always a one-off. With the right care it lasts many years. Here are the most important rules, short and honest.
Recommended
- 30 degrees, gentle cycle
- Turn inside out
- Detergent for sportswear
- Wash with similar colours
- Air dry
- Hang on a hanger
Avoid
- Tumble dryer
- High temperatures
- Chlorine bleach
- Iron
Before washing
Turn the shirt inside out and close all buttons and zips. This protects prints, flock and fittings from damage.
-
Colours & detergent
Wash your shirt with similar colours so nothing runs. Ideally use a detergent for sportswear - it is designed for synthetic fabrics.
-
Temperature & drying
Wash at a moderate 30 degrees on a gentle cycle. No tumble dryer - high temperatures fade the colours and damage the fabric. Let the shirt air dry.
-
Stains
Heavily soiled or stained? Soak the shirt beforehand in mild soap or a stain remover. Never use chlorine bleach - it fades the colours and destroys the fabric.
-
Shape & creases
Hang the shirt on a hanger to dry so it keeps its shape. Do not iron - it damages the fabric. If needed, carefully smooth heavy creases with a steamer.
Very old shirts (15+ years)
For old shirts whose print or flock is already brittle or sticky: wash as little as possible. And if you do, only by hand, never in the machine. Otherwise the print can crack and, worst case, smear the whole shirt. Be especially careful with such pieces.
