Bayer Leverkusen beendete die Bundesliga-Saison 2022–23 unter Trainer Xabi Alonso mit 50 Punkten auf Platz 6. Moussa Diaby war mit neun Toren und acht Assists der Leistungsträger des Teams, unterstützt von Jeremie Frimpong mit acht Toren und sieben Assists. In der Europa League erreichte Leverkusen mit Siegen über Union St. Gilloise das Halbfinale, scheiterte dort jedoch an AS Roma nach torlosem Heimspiel und einer 0:1-Niederlage auswärts.
