The story behind the shirt

Under manager Peter Reid, Sunderland developed into a force in the First Division over two seasons. In the 1997-98 season, the club finished third, with Kevin Phillips as the standout goalscorer: 29 league goals and 35 goals in total across the FA Cup and League Cup. The following season, 1998-99, brought great success - Sunderland won the First Division and returned to the Premier League. Phillips once again topped the goalscoring charts: 23 league goals and another 25 goals in the cups underlined his central role in the promotion success. A shirt from this season represents Sunderland's return to England's elite.
