This is immortalised in the large print on the back of this shirt. Unfortunately, this bid was also lost in 1999, this time to the Italian city of Turin. This caused quite a stir in Valais. The electorate clearly supported hosting the Winter Games, and the then Federal Councillor and head of the organising committee, Adolf Ogi, gave the bid a high profile. Most recently, the canton of Sion wanted to bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics, but this was then rejected by voters at the ballot box.
